Building a Street-Friendly 302
FBR Garage · June 5, 2026 · 11 min read

The most common mistake on a street 302 is a cam that is too big for the rest of the combination. The result is a lopey idle, poor vacuum, and a car that is tiring to drive.
Pick the cam last, after you know your compression ratio, cylinder heads, gearing, and converter. Every one of those changes what grind will work.
A dual-plane intake and a 600 to 650 CFM carburetor cover most street builds and keep mid-range torque where you use it.
Spend real money on cooling and ignition. Those are the systems that decide whether the car is enjoyable in August traffic.
